(WXYZ) - Prom night is one of the most magical nights for young men and women, but it can be very pricey.
For girls, getting the perfect dress doesn't have to cost you a fortune, thanks to one church fundraiser.
Pam Phillips of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church said, "We feel that every young lady should be able to go to her prom without breaking the bank."
It's the sixth annual "2nd life Prom Dress" sale at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on Five Mile in Livonia.
"Average price to go to the prom is over $900. When you talk about the dress, the hair, the nails, the tanning, and that's crazy. That would buy a lot of college books."
There are about 1,000 dresses to choose from, many are worth a few hundred dollars to up to $1,000!
Each item will be on sale for $20.
Most of the gowns are brand new, only a handful are gently worn donations.
Five local dress shops donated the dresses:
Bella Mia in Plymouth
Bridal Couture in Plymouth
Diane's Bridal in Livonia
Eva's Bridal in Garden City
Fashion Runway in Sterling Heights
One shop gave $20,000 worth of gowns. Sizes vary from 0 to 28.
There are also some wedding gowns and cocktail dresses for other occasions going for less than $20. And don't forget the accessories.
The money goes towards the church's out reach and mission programs. "Wherever there is a mission need that's where the money goes," Pam explained. "It goes totally back to the community."
The one day sale takes place Saturday and it always attracts a big crowd. "Kind of chaos. But fun chaos."
